When someone searches for "plumber near me" or "accountant in my city," Google shows a map with a few businesses, followed by regular results. Getting into that map and those results is local SEO. The good news: for most small businesses it comes down to a short list of fundamentals done well.
1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile
This is the single most important local step. Claim your profile, verify it, and fill in every field: services, hours, service area, description, photos and a link to your website.
2. Choose the right categories
Your primary category tells Google what you are. Pick the most specific one that fits, then add secondary categories for other services.
3. Keep your name, address and phone consistent
Your business name, address and phone number should match exactly across your website, Google profile and every directory. Small differences confuse search engines.
4. Clean up your online listings
List your business on the major directories and industry-specific sites that matter to your customers. Fix duplicates and outdated information, which can quietly hurt your visibility.
5. Ask for reviews, and reply to them
Reviews influence both rankings and whether someone picks you. Make asking part of finishing a job, make it easy with a direct link, and reply to every review, positive or negative.
6. Make your website fast and mobile-friendly
Most local searches happen on phones. A slow or awkward mobile site loses visitors and gives Google a reason to rank someone else.
7. Create pages for your services and locations
Give each major service its own page, and if you serve several areas, a page for each with genuinely useful local detail. Avoid copying the same text and swapping the city name.
8. Use local signals in titles, headings and schema
Include your service and area naturally in page titles and headings, and add LocalBusiness structured data so search engines can read your details directly.
9. Earn local links
Links from local organizations, partners, suppliers, sponsorships and press tell Google you're a real part of the community.
10. Track what happens
Connect Google Search Console and analytics, and track phone calls and form submissions, not just visits. The only metric that matters in the end is leads.
